A 30-year-old man charged with drunk driving and causing the death of his 37-year-old cousin by dangerous driving was granted a $500 bail by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Saimoni Pita Ugavule, a former British Army soldier, appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne in a special court sitting.

Aminitoni Mataibau was alleged to have died after the vehicle he was travelling in (driven by Ugavule) lost control and veered off a road in Deuba last Saturday.

It was also alleged that Ugavule was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Ugavule’s lawyer, Alofa Seruvatu applied for bail saying her client was surrendering his travel documents and was not going back to the United Kingdom since his contract with the British Army had expired.

Ms Seruvatu promised his client would work with Police and that they also needed to prepare for her client’s trial since both charges were serious.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Josua Shaw objected to bail because of the seriousness of the offence.

Ugavule, who resides in Raiwaqa, will have to report to the Raiwaqa Police Station every Saturday between 8am to 6pm.

Two sureties appeared for Ugavule with a $1000 bond each.

The case will be called again on Thursday at the Navua Magistrates Court.
