It was a proud moment for 47-year-old Taina Sawailau as she farewelled her youngest son who departed for France yesterday.

Edward Sawailau, a former Queen Victoria School crack centre, will join Grenoble Rugby Club in France.

“Eddy has always been a hardworking boy in school and as a sportsperson as well,”Taina said.

“He comes from a strong sporting background as his father used to play rugby and I used to play netball. So for him performing well on the field is what we expect from him.”

She was very proud when she came to know about Edward’s acceptance to join the French club.

“I’m very proud of Eddy’s achievement especially since he is the first of my children to get an overseas scholarship,”she said.

“The family is very proud of him and we wish him well.”

He was a member of the Fiji Under-18 side that toured to New Zealand last year.

The Naua lad from Macuata hopes to help his family through rugby.

“I would just want to help my family with what I can achieve from this scholarship since my family had gone through a lot in wanting to see me succeed.”
