A reconnaissance team from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has left for Lebanon.

Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho said the team included Commander Humphrey Tawake from the Fiji Navy and Lieutenant-Colonel Alipate Vosaicake from the Army.

He said the Commander, Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga had already announced that he had received a request from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to send a troop to Lebanon.

The Commander said that a troop curently in the Golan Heights would be deployed to Lebanon to work under UNIFIL.

Colonel Qiliho said the trip by the two was in line with the military procedures in sending peacekeepers abroad.

He said the two would make a report on what was happening on the ground in Lebanon.

“Their report will be submitted to the Commander for submission to Cabinet for approval of the deployment,” he said.

He said they would only deploy Fijian troops when final approval was received from Cabinet.

The RFMF has had a long and distinguished history of more than 20 years in Lebanon.

In making the announcement, the Commander Tikoitoga said he was grateful for the opportunity given to Fijian troops to go back the UNIFIL.

Colonel Qiliho said preparations in the Golan Heights for this deployment had already started.

Meanwhile he said the Fiji soldiers were still at Camp Ziouani, Israel, as the situation in Syria had not changed.

They were still providing security at Camp 80 and at the Observation Post 54.
