A budget of $500,000 has been allocated for this year’s Fiji National Women’s Expo.

This is an effort to promote socio-economic empowerment of rural women.

The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation has bigger and better plans for this year with Minister Rosy Akbar saying this year’s expo would increase opportunities for rural women.

“The Government intends to capitalise on the success of Fiji’s First National Women’s Expo to further strengthen the financial returns to Fiji’s women entrepreneurs,” Ms Akbar said.

“Last year’s Expo got together more than 2000 women from all over Fiji and for this year we want to make it bigger and better.

“Focus will be given to the production and marketing of quality export oriented products as well.”

Ms Akbar said the ministry would continue to strengthen its ties with the non-government organisations.

“In recognition of the important role played by the non-government organisations, faith based organisations and civil-based organisation’s.

The Government has also allocated $150,000 to enable them to advance the interests of women and girls around the country,” she said.

“Currently 200 families are being identified and they will be assisted through skills training opportunities along with the required equipment and technical expertise to venture into small to medium-size enterprises.”

Last year’s expo evaluation report shows that women have earned more than $145,000 by selling wide range of handicrafts and home-made products.

The women groups from the eastern division scooped $46,000 as their revenue from the showcase. The northern division collected $49,000; western division recorded more than $40,000 while the central division women’s group earned $20,000.
