British Lions legend Sir Ian McGeechan has backed Warren Gatland’s Wales to qualify from their World Cup Pool of death but believes another Six Nations title will prove beyond them in 2015. McGeechan believes Ireland will win the Six Nations tournament and that Wales and England will come through Pool A ahead of the Wallabies in the World Cup later this year.

In his Telegraph column, McGeechan wrote: “This is the season for Wales to win it (the Six Nations) again and I think they have a better chance than England of doing that.

“They still may finish third, however, as they have France away, and you would always expect France to have some say in the title’s destination.

“I think they will get out of that pool with England.”

McGeechan, who also believes England can reach the World Cup final by defeating Ireland in the last four, insisted a successful Welsh defence under Shaun Edwards would prove integral to their hopes in 2015.

“Edwards will be key, because it will be their defence that will need to hold up if they are to beat Australia for the first time since 2008,” he added. “Their resolution must be to be the best side without the ball. I know he is a friend of mine but Shaun is a wonderful defensive coach, so he could easily be their key man in the coming year. “That is because Wales’ biggest problem of late has been making errors that have allowed soft tries to be scored against them. Historically the Welsh have been great players with the ball – now they must prove on the world stage how good they are without it. They did that in victory over South Africa in the autumn when they did not concede a try.

“So if they can repeat that consistently in 2015 then they will be highly dangerous. “They have so many natural ball-carriers and excellent strike runners throughout the team and centre Jamie Roberts is looking the part again.
