Castaway Wins Patrons’ Hearts Through Cuisine

Castaways Island Fiji is one of those properties that despite being small, has managed to win the hearts of tourists not only through accommodation but through its excellent cuisine.

The resort, in the Mamanucas, is a finalist yet again in the AON 2014 Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards in not just one but three categories.

The categories are Back of House, for its celebrity chef, Lance Seeto Restaurants Quality & Affordability for its Lali Sand Bar and Grill Restaurant, and Accomodation Deluxe.

General Manager, Steven Andrews said the Castaway team felt honoured to be recognised again.

Its celebrity and executive chef Lance Seeto was named culinary ambassador for Fiji Airways earlier in 2013.

And Chef Seeto’s growing reputation in cuisine has given Castaway a competitive edge.

One of the most memorable events too in the resort’s timeline was when its former chief executive and chairman, Geoffrey Shaw was honoured with the Fiji Tourism Visionary Award.

Mr Andrews said: “These awards are extremely important because they identify establishments that deliver impeccable service, exceptional food and a great atmosphere.

“This is the type of experience holiday makers are looking for.”

On the resort’s performance, he added, it was getting a high repeat guest patronage at over 40 per cent.

“As with other operators in Fiji, occupancy is seasonal. However we are fortunate to have such loyalty from our guests and the sales and marketing resources of the global Outrigger Resorts group behind us.”

The awards will held on February 20 at the Sheraton Fiji Resort.

Sun INTERVIEW

Are there any upcoming upgrading plans for the resort?

Mr Stevens: We are working on some major back of house upgrades to our        engineering and laundry areas which will make the front of house operation of the resort even smoother. .

How would you describe Castaway’s guest list?

Mr Stevens: Thanks to our sales and marketing team in pushing our promotions in the market and for the loyalty of our returnee guests, we have been fortunate to have quite good occupancy over the low season.

What’s your forecast this year?

Mr Stevens: We’ll be full into mid January. February is looking challenging in occupancy but we’re optimistic our promotions in Asian market over the Chinese New Year in February will help us push occupancy levels higher.
