Professor Rajat Gyaneshwar was welcomed yesterday into his new office as he takes up the role of acting dean for College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Service of the Fiji National University.

The acting Vice Chancellor of FNU and former dean of the medical College Professor Ian Rouse handed over the office to his successor at Hoodless House.

Professor Gyaneshwar said he has a great task at hand and he was looking forward to maintaining the record set by the medical college in producing good graduates for the nation and the region.

“I have an extensive professional network in health and education and I am aware of the health issues and challenges which face Fiji and the region,” he said.

“The College and its predecessor the Fiji School of Medicine has a long and enviable record in serving the human resource health needs of Fiji and the Pacific for well over a century.

“Many graduates from the institution have achieved distinction in health, international development agencies, and politics throughout the region.”

Professor Gyaneshwar said the college would require the vice-chancellor’s full support and they were looking forward to taking the college to great heights.

“The beginning of each academic year is a busy time for the College administration to ensure that enrolments occur smoothly and that the teaching programmes are ready to start,” he said.

“Recruitment and retention of academic staff has been a long standing challenge for the College ever since I started my association with it in the 1980’s.
