An elderly woman, Karalaini Kalavo of Veisari in Lami could not hide her happiness after she was given a $50 food voucher yesterday.

The 73-year-old widow was among hundreds of recipients who   collected their food payment vouchers at the Social Welfare office in Toorak, Suva.

“My husband passed away several years ago and I have been living by myself,” Ms Kalavo said.

She said she had five children who were now married.

“I used to work as house girl and earn about $10 per day but now I’m getting old and I cannot work anymore.”

Ms Kalavo said she recently had an accident and ever since then she was using a stick to walk around.

“Times are hard but I’m happy that the Government has not forgotten us and has actually increased our food voucher payment from $30 to $50.”

She said the cost of food items were increasing and she was very happy that Government was helping senior citizens.

“With the new increase I will now be able to buy myself healthy food items.”

Director Social Welfare Rupeni Fatiaki said hundreds of recipients came to collect their food vouchers.

“This food voucher is for the next six months,” Mr Fatiaki said.

Mr Fatiaki said a total of 18,000 recipients would benefit from this programme.
