Eight people are in custody for their alleged involvement in the cultivation of marijuana.

The suspects were arrested in the Northern Division as part of the Fiji Police Force Operation Sasamaki.

More than 1200 plants believed to be marijuana were uprooted during the second phase of the operation.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said two of the three reports were received at the Tukavesi Police Station where 956 plants believed to be marijuana was uprooted from two separate farms.

“A plastic containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana were also confiscated from one of the farms,” Ms Naisoro said.

“In the third report lodged at the Savusavu Police Station, 265 plants believed to be marijuana were uprooted from six different farms.”

Meanwhile, a Fiji Police Force analyst is now at the Labasa Police Station conducting analysis on the plants and dried leaves believed to be marijuana.

Police Chief of Operations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said Operation Sasamaki was to reduce and rid drugs from society.

“The Fiji Police analyst will now be on hand to conduct the analysis of the plants or substances confiscated so that charges can be laid immediately and the suspect produced in Court,” ACP Tuidravu said.
