The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has set its focus in advancing mental health in the country.

This is one their goals for this year to assist Fijians for a better performance and productivity level.

Fiji has incorporated its Mental Health Unit into the National Wellness Centre to highlight the fact that wellness must include psychological factors for everyone starting from children.

Assistant Minister for Health Veena Bhatnagar said psychological factors were very important in functioning well.

“Psychological wellness is feeling good and functioning well and it contributes to improvements in coping ability, self-esteem, performance, productivity, and living longer,” Mrs Bhatnagar said.

“Until now Fiji has been only able to offer care for a very small percentage of people through Saint Giles Hospital which has focused on mental illness rather than psychological wellness”

Mrs Bhatnagar said the intention now was to move more services into community care so that people could be assisted closer to their own homes and family.

To assist this, the Mental Health Unit intends to train all doctors and nurses in the next two years to be able to recognise and care for people at risk of developing mental illness.

A programme called mhGAP developed by the World Health Organization has already trained over 200 staff.

Mrs Bhatnagar said a recent group to complete the training was nurse practitioners who would soon be posted to nursing stations throughout the country.
