A tough battle looms in the Indo-Fijian competition of the Uluinakau 7s tournament that starts tomorrow at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

Defending Indo-Fijian champions Nakasi Highlanders have expressed their confidence of retaining the title.

Highlanders spokesperson Zohab Hussain said they were determined of retaining the title after they recently won the PWD Bure 7s Cup in Lautoka.

“We’re looking at continuing on with that success this weekend,” he said.

“It’s been hard trying to get together to train as a team because most of the players are working so everyone has been doing their own training. We only train together during the weekends.

“It’s often been a challenge competing because we don’t have any management. We the players do everything. So we just organise everything and we all contribute to our travelling expenses to all tournaments we compete in.

“We don’t go to tournaments to win but to compete and gain experience and we’re looking forward to competing in this weekend’s tournament.”

Meanwhile, South Seas 7s team spokesperson Yatish Gopal said they have been facing a lot of obstacles during training.

“Well so far so good but bad weather conditions are hindering our preparations. It is an honour to be part of this tournament where displaying some good skills of rugby is our main priority. In the last tournament we were close in making it to the semifinals, so in this tournament our aim is to reach the finals and create some big upsets.

“I think Uluinakau 7s will help Indo-Fijian rugby move to another level and also will enhance us in learning some skills from our iTaukei brothers.”
