The Vodafone Fiji Under-17 team departed for American Samoa yesterday to feature in the 15th Oceania Football Confederation Championship (OFC) scheduled to kick off on Tuesday.

The OFC is a qualifying platform to the FIFA U17 World Cup later in October in Chile.

And the pressure is on the side to book a spot after the Vodafone U20 side was successful to qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Coach Kamal Swamy said all the teams in the OFC will come prepared.

“It will be a good test for Fiji,” Swamy said.

But he says with the help of co-coach Yogendra Dutt, Fiji has a few tricks up their sleeves.

“We are travelling with the best 20 players and we are hoping for a good outing.”

Fiji is in Group A with defending champions New Zealand, New Caledonia, Samoa, Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Group B has Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, American Samoa, Tonga and Tahiti.

Fiji plays its first match against NZ on Tuesday at the JS Blatter Stadium in Apia while matches will be co-hosted at the Pago Pago Stadium.

The side plays PNG on January 15, New Caledonia on January 17, Cook Islands on January 19 and Samoa on January 21.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Fiji Limited congratulated the 20-member squad for their dedication and hard work.

“Your sacrifice and dedication at training, the discipline and of course your soccer skills has obviously impressed your coaches for you to be considered worthy of playing for Fiji,” said Vodafone’s head of enterprise development Antonio Kitione.

“Vodafone is committed to supporting soccer at grassroots level.
