The Fiji Rugby Union have finalised a revised competition format to be presented to the games committee for its final endorsement before it is released to the unions next week.

The proposed competition is geared towards the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

FRU chief executive officer Radrodro Tabualevu stated “We want to ensure that come 2019, we have depth in all positions,”FRU chief executive officer Radrodro Tabualevu said.

“Ideally we want to be in the position as the ALL Blacks in the 2011 RWC where their 4th choice No.10 kicked the team to victory in the final.

“The majority of our backline players playing abroad seem to end up in the wings. We want to develop players that will hold their own (positions) wherever they play.”

The objectives of the revised format are:

– Elevate the quality of competition;

– Sustained high performance environment for players, coaches and match officials;

– An attractive and exciting competition for spectators and supporters;

– Increase crowd attendance / financial income for unions;

– Reduce travel expenses which are a major expense of the provincial competition;

– Have more regional matches to increase attendance and income;

– Increase players population and participation therefore increasing visibility and audience and revenue;

– Address the player’s development pathway and underage teams competitiveness;

– Prepare the players for international rugby.
