Free Water Scheme Yet To Start

The Fijian Government has yet to decide on a start date for the free water initiative promised in their FijiFirst Manifesto prior to the elections.

Water Authority of Fiji public relations consultant George Rubine said when Government approves then applications would be open to all eligible consumers.

“Free water is a Fiji government initiative and they will set the start date, meanwhile no one is receiving free water,” Mr Rubine said.

“There is still a bit of work to do and that includes organising the launch – once Government gives us the go ahead.”

The free water subsidy is an initiative of the Bainimarama government that was introduced in its FijiFirst Manifesto during last year’s elections.

Under the scheme only people earning $30,000 or less a year are eligible.

They are expected to receive 250 litres of water per day which is based on a household of five persons at 50 litres each.
