The low pressure system near the Solomon Islands is currently being monitored by the Nadi weather office.

Acting director of Fiji Meteorological Service Aminiasi Tuidraki said the system was likely to develop into a tropical cyclone.

He said the main concern now was the rain that could affect the country later in the week.

The whole of the Fiji Group has been put on a heavy rain alert for the whole of this week by the Nadi weather office.

“There will be rain for the whole of this week and cloud bands will drift into the country from the West; with some breaks and rain continues and therefore rain is forecasted for the week for the group,”Mr Tuidraki said.

“Localised and flash floods are expected with heavy rains in low-lying areas, but for river flooding we are monitoring that and the public will be warned if river levels are expected to  rise,”he said.
