The $4-million extension of the Lautoka Corrections Centre in Natabua is expected to better corrections service and its delivery, says Commissioner of Corrections Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu.

“This is our major project for this year and it would take us at least three years to complete it,” Lieutenant-Colonel Vasu said.

“The extension of the facility will help to clear overcrowding and the non-existence of a women’s facility in the Western Division,” he said.

The Lautoka Corrections facility was established in 1967 to cater for inmates in the Western Division with sentences of less than 18 months.

The new complex will include women’s inmate facilities and a counselling centre. It is funded by the government of Australia through the Australia/Fiji Law & Justice Sector Programme.
