The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has confirmed that troops based in Iraq are likely to be rotated next month.

A group of 168 soldiers were deployed to Iraq for United Nations guard force duties in October 2013 and they were supposed to be rotated with other soldiers.

Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho said, “You are right, they have been there for more than 12 months.”

Colonel Qiliho said some of the soldiers were expected to return but the Iraqi authorities were taking a bit longer to process their visas.

“Some of them will stay back and serve for another 12 months so that we can service Iraq well,” he said.

Colonel Qiliho said the Iraqi authorities needed more time to process but, “it is a normal thing”.

“The visa has been arranged but it has taken a bit longer to process and we are anticipating that we will rotate them but we will rotate the same number, hoping that all will be done by February.”
