The Fiji Police Force has recorded an increase in assault cases following the end of their festive season’s Operation ‘Yadrayadravi’.

This is despite the decrease in the number of serious crimes reported during the same period last year.

The month-long operation that began on December 10, last year, was aimed at ensuring everyone had a safe environment in which to enjoy during the festive season.

Police chief of operations Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusiate Tudravu said the operation proved to be one that was enjoyed responsibly by everyone around the country.

“Strategies were adopted throughout the five policing divisions whereby all Police support staff were pushed to the frontline to boost visibility and contain the crime rate to a minimum,” ACP Tudravu said.

“On that note it was encouraging to note a decrease in serious crimes like crimes against women and children and theft which recorded a decrease of 4 per cent, 54 per cent and 31 per cent respectively when compared to the same period last year.

“On a worrying note an increase was recorded for assault cases which recorded a 24 per cent hike in comparison to the same period last year.”

This, he said, had been identified to be caused by family disputes, relationship problems and liquor related issues.

The operation ended last Saturday.
