Attempted Suicides Worry Police

The Fiji Police Force has recorded four attempted suicide cases this year after a victim from a similar case last month died last Monday.

In an earlier release Police had confirmed professional boxer Zulfikar Joy Ali died after receiving further treatment for an attempted suicide last December.

Mr Ali, 36, was initially admitted at the Nadi Hospital before he was transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in mid-December where he later died.

Police chief of operations Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusiate Tudravu said the issue of suicides and attempted suicides has again come to the fore early this year.

“It is worrying to note that some people feel that taking their own lives is the only solution to their problems,” ACP Tudravu said.

“One recent case involved an elderly gentleman who attempted to take his own life claiming he was sickly and had been without support for the last three years.”

He confirmed that a few of the reported cases for this year had been because of relationship problems.

“This is a concern for us as we live in a caring society and we do hope more quality time can be spent with our loved ones and we must learn to accept each other’s differences,” he said.

“Public support has always been vital towards the success of our work and by working and caring for one another we can achieve our intent of keeping our society safe,” ACP Tudravu said.
