LTA Terminates More Licences

The Land Transport Authority terminated more than 100 driving licence last year.

Spokesperson Iliesa Sokia said the drivers were habitual traffic offenders.

“We have terminated 100 to 150 driving licences for habitual related offences for last year alone,” Mr Sokia said.

“These are drivers who have been caught and captured on speed cameras and being issued more than ten Traffic Infringement Notices.”

Once a person is captured four times on the speed cameras for habitual offences, the chances of getting their licences terminated is very high.

“And if you are a habitual offender in terms of overspeeding, we will suspend and terminate your licence,” he said.

This, Mr Sokia said, was because the authority was trying to curb overspeeding.

Overspeeding has been identified as the major cause of road accidents last year.

Statistics showed 38 out of the 49 people who died from road fatalities last year were caused by overspeeding.

“This year we will identify them and remove them from our roads because these are inconsiderate drivers who disregard the road rules and regulations,” Mr Sokia said.

The authority is hoping to double that number of terminated licences by the end of the year if drivers do not follow road laws.
