The Marine Industrial and Structural Engineering Limited (MISEL) directors are seriously looking at expanding the slipway to cater for bigger vessels.

The Walu Bay-based company’s current slipway can only provide repair services to vessels that weigh about 100 tonnes.

MISEL senior executive Kelepi Funilagi said they are planning to expand the slipway to cater for vessels weighing 300 tonnes.

He said while they are working on the details of the expansion they are also at the same time offering their services to locally owned- inter island vessels.

“This is because most of our business is with foreign vessels,” Mr Funilagi said.

“We haven’t set a timetable yet as to when we will carry out this expansion but it is in the pipeline.

“Vessels over 100 tonnes are being looked after by other companies because our capacity is limited. When the time will come for us to be able to service bigger vessels, for sure none of our competitors will be able to touch as in terms of prices.

“We charge reasonable prices to vessel owners and that will be the difference.”

Mr Funilagi said after the general elections in September, last year, business has been great for the company and it was evident in the festive season when they did not close down to cater for the demand by the customers.

“While other companies closed on Christmas and New Year’s week, we remained opened because we had a lot of orders.”

The company is privately owned and was incorporated on June 17, 1997.

MISEL  was formed  by  a group  of  former senior  staff  of United  Engineering  Limited which  closed  its operation  in  late 1996.  The promoters acquired the assets of United Engineering Limited and commenced business from May 14, 1998.

It has accomplished a lot of major and minor projects over the years of service. The company specialises in fitting and machining, structural steel work, boat repairers (timber, fiberglass, steel, aluminum), blasting and protective coatings and marine engine installation and service.
