All Year One students could expect their free 250-ml packet of milk from the first day of school next week.

Assistant Minister for Education Vijay Nath said the Prime Minister had made a commitment in last November’s 2015 Budget Address that free milk would be provided for Year One students this year.

“All the suppliers have done their ground work and the milk would be distributed to all schools from next week,” he said.

“All Year One students in urban, rural and maritime schools would be getting their free milk just in time for the start of school, as the milk would be distributed in bulk for one month.”

Mr Nath said the ministry had based their supply on last year’s Third Term Year One student numbers.

“The initiative was announced in the 2015 National Budget and $3.5 million had been allocated by Government towards this.

“The free milk is provided to promote good health and nutrition,”Mr Nath said

“The parents should take Government’s initiatives of free textbooks, bus fare assistance, school fees and now free milk positively and send their children to school,” Mr Nath said.

Meanwhile, a Litia Wakanivugayali, parent from Kadavu who was shopping in Suva, said milk was very expensive in the islands.

“We are happy that Government is thinking about our children’s health also,” she said.
