Ra province has issued an apology to the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama after rumors that the province wanted to form a state of their own.

A meeting with chiefs from different villages was conducted at the Ra Provincial Council office in Ra yesterday.

The need for a new state arose when issues of land, iqoliqoli bill and religion were being affected.

Ra Bosevanua chairman Osea Kasami said that they needed to apologise to the Prime Minister because of the matter.

“With regards to the consultation that we have conducted,  majority of the people have refused the idea of having a state of our own.

“Therefore since the Prime Minister has heard about this issue before this meeting, we will need to make an official trip to him and apologise on everyone’s behalf,” he said.

Mr Kasami said the problem were with the minority who was not happy with some issues.

“Majority of the people of Ra are happy with the current Government. It is just the minority who has certain issues even so their opinions were still needed to be heard and with the result of the meeting we have gone with the majority,” he said.

This was the second meeting that was to be conducted regarding the issue.

“The first meeting we had did not have many chiefs present, but now we have the whole 20 chiefs that were present during the discussion.

“Nakorotabu, Nalawa and part of Saivou Village has declined and the other part with the Rakiraki tikina had accepted so overall the majority had declined,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tui Nalawa Ratu Epeli Naidamu said there was no need for his village or the province to form a new State.
