‘Prepare Nutritious Lunches’

The Ministry of Health has urged parents to prepare nutritious lunches and snacks for their children when they resume school this year.
Health media liaison officer Sunil Chandra said: “Good quality food will contribute to meeting a child’s physical energy requirements and assist their concentration in class.
“It is important to ensure that healthy lunches and snacks are included as an important part of a school day.
“Parents can help determine a child’s lifelong eating habits by setting a good example of choosing healthy foods,” he said.
Mr Chandra said Fiji had an abundance of local fresh fruits and vegetables that were cheap and convenient; this could be used to prepare nutritious lunches and snacks for children.
“Parents and teachers could contact the nearest health centre for more information on nutrition or can visit the National Food and Nutrition Centre,” Mr Chandra said.
The ministry also stressed that the consumption of clean water or fresh fruit juices helps children to stay hydrated during the day.
Mr Chandra said it was important for students to have a healthy, balanced and nutritious breakfast before leaving home.
