The Suva City Council has urged ratepayers to pay their arrears or face fines.

Council chief executive officer Bijay Chand said: “The city rates arrears for the past years stands at $16million.

“It is very hard for the council to maintain its services if ratepayers do not pay their rates.

“There’s a three-month amnesty period where 100 per cent of the interest is waived if arrears are paid in full between January 1 and March 31, 2015,

“This means they will only pay the principal amount on rates arrears and all interest will be waived,” he said.

The council is requesting ratepayers to take advantage of the amnesty period for a full waiver of interest on arrears and the discount offered on 2015 rates.

Ratepayers should clear their rates arrears to avoid legal action being taken against them.
