The Ministry of Education is urging all parents to ensure their children are in school when Term One begins tomorrow.

Minister Mahendra Reddy said the ministry could not understand why some parents always stop their children from attending school when education was now free.

“I encourage parents, as the school is starting, to ensure that they send their children to school. If there is anything wrong, I appeal to the parents to come to the ministry and discuss it with us,” Mr Reddy said.

“If there is anything or any specific problem we can obviously provide assistance or we can get some NGO’s or some people in the society that may want to help.”

Meanwhile, the 40 retired teachers to be recruited by the ministry under the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council, would be working on an hourly basis around the country to talk to and engage with students on substance abuse.

“Basically there is no requirement because they already have the collective wisdom that we want to tap into for them to go and talk to the students. They have been through the system and they know the behaviour of the students and they also know how to deal with the students,” Mr Reddy said.
