FTA Praises New Union Poll Rules

The involvement of the Fijian Elections Office augurs well for the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA).

The new guidelines for the trade union elections require the union secretariat to submit to the Fijian Elections Office the total number of members who were entitled to vote.

It also requires the secretariat to provide a list of members who were disqualified from voting. Under the guidelines, members who were disqualified from voting will be allowed time to resolve their disqualification and be enrolled to vote.

FTA president Gauna Halofaki hopes the 3500 members of the association will all turn out later this year to vote for their new office bearers under the new guidelines.  At the moment, the FTA is finalising its rolls for the election of its office bearers.

“We have already sent in our applications and all they have requested us is to update our rolls and we are fully complying with what they want us to do,” Mr Halofaki said.

“I think what is required of us to do by the Elections office is really good because it will make our election more transparent and efficient.

“We have 3500 members all together around the country and during the election we have 400 members turning up to vote and that is why we are updating our roll,” he said.

According to the Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, the first trade union elections will be conducted next month with the Coral Coast Tourism and Catering Workers union in Nadroga, Sigatoka.
