Thirty-five-year-old Laite Duve will not stop to ensure that her son will receive the best education he can get.

Desperate to send her son to school the mother of two said she had tried everything and her last hope was with the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

“We do not come from a financially supported background so things are very difficult for us; my husband and I don’t earn that much.

“I heard about the consultation on radio and it said something about the Child and Protection programme so I decided to attend it,” she said.

Ms Duve and her eight-year-old son Kolinio Sivo attended the consultation conducted by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, yesterday.

“This will be the first time for me to approach the Ministry for assistance and it will also be the first time for me to register for the assistance scheme.

“The consultation has been very helpful for me as I have come to know a lot of things on how the Ministry can assist me and I hope to send my son to school soon,” Ms Duve said.

She said that she would not stop striving to see her son in school.

“Kolinio keeps telling me to put him in a school and as a mother I will make sure that he gets this; it is not good to stop a child from having the right to education,” she said.

Ms Duve is currently selling crabs to meet help their financial needs and sharing the duty of looking after the family with her husband who is a seasonal cane cutter.

During the consultation she was told by a Social Welfare officer to list down what her son needed and they would deliver them to her village.
