PM: Milk Will Be Delivered

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is not happy that the free milk promised to Year 1 students this year was not ready for supply.

However, he has given his assurance that the milk would be in schools as soon as they were ready.

Despite the delay, Mr Bainimarama said it was better to get things right and they could not afford short cuts in terms of the quality of the milk, its packaging, or its distribution.

“Sometimes, unexpected things get in the way and they are working with Fiji Dairy Limited to roll out this programme as fast as they can,” he said while opening the Vatukarasa Health Centre yesterday.

“So we are sorry for the delay, but it is more important to get the programme right – to provide our children with the boost to their health and nutrition that they need to develop their bodies as well as their minds.”

The free milk initiative for Year One, he said, was an important leg-up for low-income families.

Mr Bainimarama also announced that Government would begin delivering free water they had promised to low income Fijians on February 1.

“Under this programme, which was a key plank of the FiijFirst manifesto before the election and is detailed in the 2015 Budget – everyhousehold with a combined income of less that $30,000 a year will get an allocation of fre water based on an international standard of how much water a person needs everyday, which is 50 litres,” he said.

Each household, based on an average of five people a hose, he said would get up to a maximum of 250 litres of water free each day.

He stressed that this only applied to Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) customers.

“But for the rest, I can assure you that we are working to get every Fijian connected as soon as possible so that they too can take advantage of this initiative.”

A press release from the Water Authority of Fiji yesterday said to qualify for the free water programme customers must register before February 1.
