Trustees Abuse Land Lease Money: Kurusiga
The Deputy Permanent Secretary Apakuki Kurusiga

Reports of alleged abuse of lease money have been received by the Ministry of the iTaukei Affairs.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary Apakuki Kurusiga confirmed yesterday that he had received these reports.

Mr Kurusiga said it was very unfortunate that the trustees had breached the trust of landowners.

“These trustees had been elected and the members of the trust fund had trusted them to carry out their duty faithfully.”

In an incident in Ba, trustees of a landowning unit had withdrawn money for their personal use during Christmas.

Mr Kurusiga said the trustees were accountable to the members of the trust and should at all times bear in mind that the money belonged to the members.

The iTaukei Land Trust Board will now handle the complaints.

Mr Kurusiga suggested that more restrictions should be laid down on the withdrawal of the money.

He also said the trustees should give a report to the members every month.
