The youngest diabetic Type One patient in Fiji is a one-year-five-month-old baby.

This was revealed by Dr Rajeshwar Sharma at the Diabetes Community Peer Group Outreach programme at Koronivia near Nausori yesterday.

Type One is insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes, affecting mostly adolescents and children. Type Two or non-insulin-dependent diabetes or maturity onset diabetes, occurs more frequently with adults.

He said the youngest Type Two diabetic patient was a 12-year-old which was very worrying.

“As the number of people with diabetes continues to rise, it is increasingly important for people to join peer groups to support and educate each other,” Dr Sharma said.

He said it took effort to have good eating habits and a certain amount of will power to increase physical activity to stay healthy.

“We want to show the people the importance of early detection, accurate diagnosis, diabetes education, lifestyle, social support, and a positive outlook.”

This, Dr Sharma said, was critical in improving the overall health and quality of life of people with and those at risk of developing diabetes.

“Foot infections in diabetic patients are one of the many reasons for leg amputations which could also lead to deaths.”

He said they wanted to create a lot of awareness so that people could take all the necessary proactive measures.

The programme is in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation.
