The Ba Chamber of Commerce and Industries is taking on a different approach when a natural disaster like flooding affects the township.

They are now working together with the Ba Town Council and mapping out plans to counter the natural disaster.

Since the establishment of the Ba Town 75 years ago the town has endured many floods.

Chamber secretary Anil Amin said the 545 businesshouses in Ba which they represent were prone to the disaster.

“The chamber is very vigilant on the issue of flood with the Ba town council,” he said.

Mr Amin said most of the chamber members have always been a victim of flood.

“We have learned a lot in previous years and none of the businesses in Ba wants to encounter it any more. We are working closely with the town council to set up strategic measures but everyone needs to ensure to heed flood warning while dredging of the Ba River takes its shape,” he said.

Ba Town Council chief executive officer Dip Narayan said 15 kilometres of the Ba River had been dredged since December 2012.

“Since December 2012 stage three has been completed, which is 15 kilometers have been dredged completely,” said Mr Narayan.

“There was a heavy downpour in 2013 which had delayed the process. At the moment Stage 4, which is from Ba Bridge towards FSC, has been advertised and is expected to start soon.”

Meanwhile, two flood warning meters have been set up in the town area at the Elevuka creek which runs beside the Ba Market. The other is located along the river bank where the old bridge is near the MH Supermarket.
