Bau Fishing Licence Issue Resolved

The issue of fishing licence in Bau waters has now been resolved with Bau chief, Ratu George Kadavulevu Cakobau, being confirmed as the sole signatory.

This is after members of the Cakobau family, met with the Roko Tui Tailevu, Semisi Saukawa, at the Tailevu Provincial Council office in Nausori last Thursday to clarify the signing of fishing licences for fishermen who wanted to fish in Bau waters.

Ratu Epenisa Cakobau had told Mr Saukawa that he would not be present but said that the meeting was convened.

“Present at the meeting was the Roko Tui Tailevu, the Assistant Roko, Adi Litia Cakobau and my children,” Ratu George said.

He said during the meeting everything was finalised that he (Ratu George) was to be the sole signatory to all fishing licenses on Bau waters.

“Adi Litia gave her blessing to the decision,” he said.

Ratu George said he had taken it back as he was the custodian of the Bau fishing grounds.

On the number of licences, he said for this year he had not decided.

He said last year 52 licences were given out and this was too many.

Ratu George said Bau natives would not require a licence if they only fished for their daily consumption and traditional gatherings.

“Only if they fish commercially then they would need a licence.”

The procedure for the signing of the fishing licence will be – he will sign and this will be taken to the Roko or the Provincial Council office to sign and the Commissioner Central will then do the stamping.

The fishing licence for this year he said would cost $3000 or $300 per month.
