Father Appears For Alleged Child Beating

A father who allegedly assaulted his eight-year-old daughter on Saturday appeared in the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday.

Alipate Lomanivenesa of Nadera, Nasinu, is charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

He has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court on the February 6.

The alleged incident had prompted the Ministry for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation to remove the victim and seven siblings from their father’s care.

According to the ministry the parents of the victim had been separated for the last six months.

The seven siblings lived with the father while the mother lived with another daughter in a one-bedroom house in Namadi Heights, Suva.

The case was reported to the Ministry from a concerned neighbour who heard the children being beaten by the father.

The victim remains in the care of the Ministry of Social Welfare while her six siblings were placed in their mother’s care.

The ministry will carry out an immediate risk and need assessment of this case. When completed, they will then determine the child care protection programme in which the family could be assisted further.
