Fiji-UK Teams Meet

The Fijian Parliament delegation yesterday held a series of meetings with its counterparts in London.

Firstly, the delegation met with the acting Secretary-General for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Joe Omorodion and then met with the Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary-General Martin Chungong.

The CPA and the IPU are the two major networks of global parliaments.

The Parliament Secretary-General, Viniana Namosimalua also had the opportunity to meet with her counterpart in the UK House of Commons, David Natzler.

Discussions covered the role of the Parliament Secretariat and the processes and procedures used in the Westminster Parliament.

The delegation met the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Rt Hon John Spellar, to outline recent developments in Fiji in terms of the election and the operation of Parliament.

The delegation also met Hon. Simon Danczuk MP to discuss the role of an opposition MP and the way the Parliament worked in the UK House of Commons.

The delegation heard in particular that the Parliament Committees in the UK House of Commons were important forums for allowing MPs to discuss issues in detail and more consensus between MPs was found in committees than in the Parliament chamber.
