The opening of Fiji’s new High Commission office in Papua New Guinea has been seen as an indication for the imminent deployment of a Fijian Trade Commissioner.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, while opening “Fiji Haus” said the Trade Commissioner would work with the Fiji High Commission to further enhance bilateral and economic ties.

A Trade Commission to PNG is understood to have not been appointed as a suitable candidate has not been found.

Fiji exports into PNG, he said, had grown three folds over the past three years and there were many opportunities for PNG to expand exports into Fiji.

“Our current bilateral relationship has seen investments by PNG into Fiji from some of the biggest financial players such as BSP, Credit Corp and the Handy Finance Group,” he said.

“A staggering FJ$218 million has been invested into infrastructure and Tourism such as the Grand Pacific Hotel and the Pearl South Pacific Resort.”

Ratu Inoke also said PNG was a resource rich nation with increasing interests for investment into the country.

He assured that Fiji’s commercial interests and engagement remained.
