The Speaker of the Fiji Parliament, Jiko Luveni, yesterday met the first woman Speaker of the UK House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd.

Ms Boothroyd served as a Member of Parliament from 1973 to 2000 and became the first and only female Speaker from 1992 to 2000.

The Fiji delegation then met the Speaker of the UK House of Lords, the Lord Speaker Baroness D’Souza.

Discussions were mainly on the way the House of Lords work and the role of the Lord Speaker.

The Legislative Clerk in the House of Commons, Kate Ems, also held discussions with the delegation on the legislative process in the UK Parliament.

The delegation then met the Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma where they provided the Secretary General with an update on political developments in Fiji and in particular, the work of the Parliament since elections in September last year.

Opposition Chief Whip Rosie Winterton MP was also present to meet the Fiji delegation where she explained the operation of the political groups in the Westminster Parliament, the role of the Chief Whip and the Opposition Chief Whip.
