Officers For Scrutiny Today

Senior civil servants will appear before the Public Accounts Committee this morning to explain anomalies in financial accounts and procedures.

The Committee members will ask for an update from the various ministries on implementations based on recommendations from the Auditor-General’s Office.

Some of the issues raised yesterday by the Public Accounts Committee are expected to be part of the interviews today.

These include;

nHow much domestic borrowing, amount, interest rates and outstanding amount for interest payment and the extent of international borrowing by the Fijian Government to date.

nLack of clarity on transport policy and enforcement after it was revealed $1.1 million was still outstanding in surcharges from 2004-2014 relating to accidents in Government vehicles

nAnomalies like the unauthorised purchase of over $1200 worth of liquor by a consultant hired by the Government to prosecute former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase

nGovernment Whip Semi Koroilavesau wanted disciplinary measures against civil servants fast-tracked and wanted recommendations on how to implement his suggestion. He said disciplinary measures should not be the perogative of the PAC

nLoan Guarantees by the Government. The case of the Government intervening to pay off a loan by the Fiji Sports Council from the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) was raised yesterday

Mr Prasad said Government should be upfront about guaranteeing loans.

The Committee is setting itself an ambitous target of reviewing the 2009 report from the previous Public Accounts Committee on the Auditor-Generals report by tomorrow.
