The Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama visited the Fiji National University’s Fiji Maritime Academy at Laucala Bay, Suva, yesterday to see the progress of the new bridge simulation training facility.

He was briefed by director in charge/chief executive officer, Captain Suren Gurusinghe.

Captain Gurusinghe said the simulation training facility was a new concept that had been introduced into the maritime course.

“The training that students undertake here using the simulator is more effective as it is monitored by skilled and trained instructors,” Captain Gurusinghe said.

He said the simulator brought a virtual reality into the academy where students could be taught how to conduct search and rescue operations.

At the bridge simulator room, Mr Bainimarama, a former Fiji Navy commander, saw ships entering the Indonesian port of entry. Captain Gurusinghe said the bridge simulator room had been equipped with modern technology and the most advanced in the Pacific.

The principal lecturer, Tevita Robanakadavu, said with the sophisticated equipment in the room, students would do the sea time requirements there.

He said they did not have the ports of entries in Fiji as they were still under the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).

According to Mr Robanakadavu once MSAF handed over the port of entries to them, they will make a survey and include them in the programme.

Once that done, he said they would track from the bridge simulator room all ships that enter all ports of entries in Fiji.

The Prime Minister and his party were treated to a lunch during the visit.
