Protect Marine: Chief

The Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has advised villages in Naduri to consider preserving their marine ecosystem.

He sounded the advice during the Ridges to Reef Pocket Workshop conducted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Forest at Nabukadogo Village at Naduri in Macuata yesterday.

Ratu Wiliame said the workshop was important for the people of Caumatalevu.

He said people living in coastal villages had requested Government for the first pocket workshop to be held in Macuata.

“I thank Government, especially the Fisheries Department for bringing the first pocket workshop to Macuata” he said.

He said the workshop would help the people of Macuata startup marine businesses and learn on how to protect the marine life.

“Now it is your turn to practice what you have learnt from the workshop and change the way you look at the ecosystem,” she said.

Ratu Wiliame told the villagers that the workshop would help their families, clan and the village as a whole.

“Let’s continue what we have learnt and make sure that we practice it at our own villages.

Meanwhile, Merewalesi Likutagane, 20, said the workshop had helped her understand ways to protect the village marine ecosystem and the planting of seaweeds.

“With the help from the Government, we can now start off our business at our very own village,” she said.
