Fake Tabua, Nothing New

Former Prime Ministers, Sitiveni Rabuka and Laisenia Qarase yesterday confirmed that they had been presented fake tabua when they were in office.

Their comments came after Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed he had been presented with a fake tabua in a village in Tailevu.

“Yes, I was presented a fake tabua in one of my visits to a village in Tailevu,” he said.

“Io sa levu sara.” (Yes, there are many around)

A member of the former Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), who wanted to remain anonymous, said even the late President, Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu, was also presented a fake tabua when he opened a chiefly meeting in Suva.

“The fake was discovered later at the President’s residence,” she said.

Former Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed he was also a victim when he was leading the nation back then.

He said when he was chairman of the GCC, there was a move made by the chiefs to stop the use of fake tabua.

He said they had wanted all the tabua to be bought by the then Ministry for Fijian Affairs and anyone who wanted a tabua was to buy it from the ministry at a cheaper price.

However, the move could not be enforced as many members said they wanted the tabua to be in their possession at all times.

Mr Rabuka said he was not surprise to hear of fake tabua saying there were many in circulation.

He said it was hard to detect it, but the fake tabua is usually lighter than the genuine one.

“You can feel it when you receive it,” he said.

When contacted yesterday, the deputy Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Apakuki Kurusiga, said they had been informed that there was a machine here in Fiji that manufactured fake tabua.

“Fake tabua is made out of fibreglass,” he said.

He said they had also been informed that some were coming from America.
