Road Marshall Turns Heads

He is no soldier, but a regular Fijian who controls traffic at the entrance to the Nadi International Airport.

And he is grabbing a lot of attention. A talk of the West for those who have watched him at work directing traffic on a four-lane road undergoing upgrade.

Passers by, commuters and our visitors marvelled at the way Suliasi Koroiwaca directs traffic at one of Nadi’s busiest road junctions.

One small mistake will cause a road accident.

But Mr Koroiwaca, 33, from Nakini, Naitasiri, has that under control while he is on duty.

He follows his hand signals directing traffic with his dance moves.

Mr Koroiwaca braves the hot Nadi sun daily. A delight to watch.

He said he loves to make people happy with his work.

“I love doing what I do and that is making people laugh or smile when they drive past, especially in a long traffic that can really get us stressed,” Mr Koroiwaca said.

The former security officer was based at Denarau Island before being recruited by Fiji Roads Authority contractors, Higgins Group.

“Having to work in a field where I get to make people laugh is all I could ever ask for. In Denarau, I had come through many events.

“Having a family with a 14-year-old daughter to look after, I had to look for a job that would financially assist me. It was made possible with the Higgins Group,” he said.

His wife, Maca, 30, said her husband was always the happiest person in the family.

“At home I can be the one who would always be angry, but Suli would always try to be positive and make us laugh,” she said.

“He loves his job because he loves making people happy not only at work, but at home as well,” she said.

Mr Koroiwaca was a former radio announcer in the West.

He said he would continue his duty of serving people.
