There have been 72 cases of dengue fever in the North so far.

This was confrimed by the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Jone Usamate, yesterday.

Speaking during the launching of the new Mobile Medical bus, Mr Usamate said the numbers were confirmed by the Labasa Hospital lab.

He said the virus had spread over Macuata from Seaqaqa, Wailevu, Vunicuicui, Bulileka, Nasekula, Naodamu, Namara, Vunika, Malau, Vunivutu, right up to Lakeba and Udu.

“Dengue is in the North; We have 67 cases in Labasa, one in Taveuni and four in Seaqaqa,” Mr Usamate said.

“Dengue will only be solved if people ensure that mosquitoes breeding places are destroyed and dengue cases are well-treated as early as possible,” he said.

Mr Usamate said the main focus was to get people in the North to engage in health-seeking attitude and start working on keeping their surroundings clean.

He also made note of the 16 cases of typhoid confirmed in the North.

“We have nine in Bua, four in Labasa and three in Savusavu” the Minister said.

Mr Usamate said typhoid could not only be solved by medicine but more importantly through good personal hygienic practices like washing of hands.

One case of leptospirosis has also been confirmed in Labasa.
