Refrain from giving money to beggars and help us help them live a decent life.

This was the message from the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, at the Suva Market on Thursday.

“For the first time we have created an income-generating project to assist women who were found begging on the streets of Suva and so far we have accommodated two women,” Ms Akbar said.

She said the ministry would provide them with the supplies free of charge and they were to sell them every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“We have paid this weeks stall fees however from next week they will have to pay their own.

“It is important for you to remain in your jobs for a long time because it will do you good and will encourage us to help more people like you.”

She added they were aware that some of them were very resilient as they were generational beggars.

“Our officers will be closely following up on them and I want my staff to buy vegetables from them and also the public and help them live a decent life.”

Ms Akbar said they would be engaging 10 more beggars to work as vendors.

Meanwhile, Fiji’s First Rehabilitation Centre for street beggars in Colo-i-Suva will be open next Friday.
