Health Ministry Under Scrutiny

The Ministry of Health will return to the Public Accounts Committee on the 23rd of next month to answer more questions on financial anomalies from 2007.

The committee members weren’t happy with some of the answers from Deputy Secretary Marika Luveniyali and asked that Permanent Secretary Metuisela Tuicakau and members of the ministry’s procurement team attend the next committee sitting.

The committee took the ministry to task over several issues:

– Excessive printing: The committee wanted to know why the Ministry of Health was outsourcing printing work in 2007 when the Government Printery provided reasonable rates.

nOverpayment of salaries:  The Auditor-General’s Office blamed the lack of connectivity to the ministry’s remote stations in rural areas as a major factor for this. However, Government members of the committee Semi Koroilavesau and Sanjit Patel said this was not an excuse and the ministry needed to tighten its controls.-

At the end of the briefing in response to concerns about the lack of oversight on the Naboro Landfill, the committee members left for a spot check.
