The Fiji Development Bank in Suva was a hive of activity as people rushed in to make use of its Micro and Small Business Grant scheme before it closed yesterday.

Government had allocated $1million for this scheme which is to be administered through the FDB

Among the hundreds that turned up were Naitasiri farmers Anareta Vunawere, 22, of Serea and Savenaca Cakacaka, 35, of Lomaivuna in Naitasiri.

They were among hopefuls trying to make use of the $1000-grant to farmers to help expand their farming businesses.

One of the requirements is for applicants to currently have a business prior to applying for the grant.

Ms Vunawere plants dalo, cassava and ginger at her farm back in Serea.

“I have applied because I want to improve our business. If I get the grant I hope to use the money to buy some manure and weedicide for my farm,” Ms Vunawere said.

Mr Cakacaka, who has been farming for the past two years, said: “My farm is located right inside and the road condition is not good. So I hope to use this grant to purchase a wheelbarrow to assist me in getting my produce to the main road.”

“I also want to buy a tarpaulin to house the manure I use at the farm and also a chainsaw to help me clear huge trees.”
