The two greatest tools to being self-reliant are hard work and determination says Lila Wati.

The 67-year-old vendor of Navua said she had been selling vegetables along the roadside to earn a living.

Ms Wati said: “My life is hard especially as a widow; I have to sell vegetables from morning till 7 o’clock at night.

“Whereas for some at my age, they rest and enjoy their lives with their grandchildren.”

She has been selling vegetables for the past 15 years.

“In a day, I earn $10 but at times it is not enough for me since I have to buy vegetables and then sell them,” Ms Wati said.

“I have two daughters; both are married and my husband died 25 years ago.

“I have faced a lot of financial difficulties and that is when I decided that I have to earn money for myself rather than begging in order to put food on the table.

“I believe in my own hard work and determination,” she said.

Recently for the first time Ms Wati received social welfare assistance from the Government. She now gets $50 per month for her livelyhood.

“I do not depend on Government but it is good they are assisting the poor and needy.”
