Market vendors were urged on Thursday to use their new-found knowledge well to better their lives.

This comes after the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Parveen Kumar, as chief guest, handed certificates to the vendors at the Civic Centre in Labasa.

Mr Bala said the event marked a special day for the women as they received their certificates after successfully completing their training organised by the United Nations Women’s Programme and the Australian government.

“The Market for Change project builds on UN women’s existing working relationship with local governments,” Mr Bala said.

“Our markets provide a place of employment or work for the informal sector where thousands of people can earn their living, most being women who are very often the sole income earners for their family.”

He said the economic activities like trading and education were essential to ensure that goods or services provided were continuously improved and the parties involved were happy with their returns.

The minister also made assurances that the ministry would continue to support the municipalities around the country, through infrastructure development and improvement in service delivery.

He said the onus was on the vendors to implement the knowledge gained through the training and improving their financial status and social status.

Meanwhile, Jessie Masioliva, 57, said the two-day workshop held last year was helpful.

“The workshop has helped me make improvements in the facilities in my food stall and making sure that my surroundings is very cheap,” she said.
