The Fijian Parliament delegation travelled to Edinburgh, Scotland, to visit the Scottish Parliament where the Speaker, Jiko Luveni, was hosted by the presiding officer [Speaker], Tricia Marwick, who has been in the post since 2011.

The delegation was invited to sit in the presiding officer’s gallery to observe proceedings in the chamber that included a session of questions to the Scottish First Minister.

The Scottish Parliament has 17 committees and is one of the most active Parliaments in the world using new innovations to encourage public participation in the work of its committees.

The secretariat staff provided an in-depth briefing on the committee system and their roles in supporting members of Parliament.

The Fijian Parliament delegation was also briefed by the Scottish Parliament clerk and chief executive Paul Grice.

While the Fijian Parliament has a business committee that discusses and agrees on Parliament’s business and its timelines, the Scottish Parliament has a Parliament Bureau that performs similar function.

Also visiting the Scottish Parliament was the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mitchel McLaughlin.

Dr Luveni used the opportunity to congratulate Mr McLaughlin on his recent appointment and discussed recent developments in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
