The Fijian woman arrested last week in Malaysia for smuggling drugs is an Indo-Fijian.

This was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Acting Permanent Secretary, Esala Nayasi, yesterday.

About 1.51 kilograms of Methamphetamine was found on the 26-year-old woman at the Kuala Lumpur Airport last week.

Mr Nayasi said they have yet to identify and contact the woman’s family in Fiji.

“Discussions are still ongoing on how best we could assist her; we’re trying to resolve the matter,” Mr Nayasi said.

He said a team from the embassy in Kuala Lumpur has visited the woman in Police Custody.

Meanwhile, the woman is being held under Section 39 (B) of Malaysian Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952.

Carrying more than 50 grams of methamphetamines, also known as ice, can warrant the death penalty in Malaysia, who with its neighbour Indonesia, have stringent anti-drug trafficking laws.

Mr Nayasi said yesterday afternoon they were still awaiting further development and gathering information and once they do they will be able to comment further.

Meanwhile, he said they were doing everything to help the woman.
